Histamine is a chemical compound that is found naturally in certain foods and in the cells of the body. It plays a critical role in the immune system, inflammation, and communication with the brain. However, too much histamine can lead to a decrease in tolerance and cause histamine intolerance. This can happen due to genetic or simple impairment of enzymes that break down histamine. Histamine intolerance is commonly found in people with gastrointestinal conditions like IBS, celiac, and SIBO.
