To begin his discussion, Dr. Salzarulo emphasized the crucial understanding of the physiological “terrain,” a concept that defines the ecology of our bodies. He underscored the importance of maintaining a healthy terrain through balancing the body’s components: trillions of various cells, a diverse microbiome, ample body fluid, and the careful management of toxins. He elucidated the role of emunctories, organs specialized in waste removal, in maintaining this balance. His holistic approach to health, combining terrain education with patient empowerment, seeks to improve compliance and health outcomes. For a deeper dive into this topic, refer to Dr. Salzarulo’s past webinar, where he provides an extensive discussion on the role of terrain in holistic healthcare, link is provided below.

The Concept of Homeopathic Miasms

What exactly are miasms? In the simplest terms, miasms illustrate the way the body manages elimination, and why certain individuals manifest specific symptoms, while others express their symptoms differently.

Three primary miasms are widely recognized: Psoric, Sycotic, and Luetic/Syphilitic.

Each miasm represents a different way in which the body deals with toxins.

  • Psoric: The body expels toxins outward, often onto the skin, leading to symptoms such as eczema, asthma, allergies, digestive conditions, and rashes.
  • Sycotic: The body tends to retain toxins, depositing them in internal repositories. This can result in symptoms such as sore throat, earaches, swollen glands, fibroids, cysts, skin tags, fat deposits, rashes, and digestive conditions.
  • Luetic/Syphilitic: Here, the body gets rid of toxins through destruction, often seen as a suppression of the first two miasms and usually manifests later. Conditions associated with this miasm include multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, and Crohn’s disease.

What to do when symptoms occur?

  • Help assist the body in restoring its balance
  • Do not suppress because suppression drives toxins deeper in the symptoms

A Deep Dive with two Case Studies

To further illuminate these concepts, Dr. Salzarulo shares two compelling case studies.

The first case study involves a 41-year-old African American female who presented with eczema. She had a history of asthma and allergies.

Chief Complaints in this Case Study:

  • Itchy, dry, bumpy skin throughout her entire body, especially on her abdomen, hands, thighs, and upper arms.
  • She had been to at least 10 dermatologists, who treated her with several different types of creams, including many different types of steroid creams.
  • Patient also took Prednisone on and off since her teenage years, when the itching became unbearable.
  • None of the above-mentioned treatments resulted in resolution of symptoms; at best, they provided temporary relief.
  • Patient also tried fish oil and multivitamins.
  • Patient reports that the symptoms have worsened over the years and was dubious that she would ever have lasting relief.
  • In addition to eczema, the patient has a long history of asthma (since early teen years) and allergies to pollen, ragweed, and grass.

The psoric miasm was identified in this case.

The patient protocol comprised of Homeopathic Drainage Remedies, Adrenal Support, and diet and lifestyle changes, including the elimination of eczema trigger foods. Also, adrenal, gut, and liver support remedies were implemented. After approximately three and a half years of following this protocol, the patient reported an improvement in her skin issues.

Eczema Trigger Foods that were eliminated:

  • Sugar, alcohol, fried foods, wheat, gluten grains, eggs, dairy (cow, goat, and sheep milk, ALL cheese and chocolate), soy, corn, shellfish, peanuts, most tree nuts (especially cashews), tomatoes, strawberries, citrus fruits

The second case study discusses a 71-year-old Caucasian female diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

Chief complaints:

  • Memory loss and apathy. Patient stated, “my short-term memory has deteriorated” and her husband stated that it was necessary to constantly frequently repeat questions and information to get a response.
  • Patient stated that she was no longer interested in and did not have the motivation to garden, exercise, or other activities that she previously enjoyed on a regular basis.

With memory loss and apathy as her chief complaints, this patient was classified under the Luetic/Syphilitic miasm.

Testing:

  • Heavy Metals testing revealed Mercury present at 60 times the reference range, and Lead present at 40 times the reference range.
  • Patient also tested for HSV 1 at 25 times the reference range. Mold tests revealed multiple strains of mold toxicity.

After implementing a dedicated protocol involving a Comprehensive Homeopathic Detox, Kidney Drainage, and Liver Drainage, the patient noticed significant improvements (with her symptoms) within six months.

Outcome:

  • Approximately six months later, the patient states that she has resumed gardening and exercising daily and feels that she has “turned a corner and has gotten her life back”.
  • Patient has made plans to resume travel.

 Clinical Pearls:

When dealing with homeopathic miasms, the key is to identify the miasm and tailor a program focused on balancing it. Incorporating dietary and lifestyle modifications, along with homeopathic remedies, can provide temporary relief from symptoms of congested drainage pathways such as headache, brain fog, anxiety, joint swelling and pain, and gastric upset.
