Pathogen Driven Allergic Responses: Understanding Alpha Gal Syndrome

Aug 11, 2023 | Articles

What Is Alpha-Gal Syndrome?
Alpha-Gal Syndrome (AGS) is a vector-born–associated, immunoglobulin E (IgE)–mediated condition that stems from an allergic reaction to galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), a sugar molecule predominantly found in most non-primate mammals like beef, pork, lamb, rabbit, and venison. Additionally, it’s present in mammalian products like gelatin, cow’s milk, and other dairy products. More on this can be found at Alpha-Gal Information.

The Connection
There’s an intriguing connection between tick bites and the onset of AGS. The primary suspect is the Lone Star tick, prevalent mainly in the SE and E US. Exposure to this tick has been linked to AGS via the transmission of an Ehrlichia infection. While a causal relationship hasn’t been confirmed, these ticks are also known to transmit other infections such as Heartland virus, STARI, Bourbon virus, and tularemia. The CDC, as of July 23, 2023, reports a rising trend in vector-born Alpha-Gal cases in the US. However, exact numbers remain elusive. 1

Reports & Clinical Presentation

For those diagnosed with AGS:

• Over 85% experienced its onset in their adult life.
• Reactions can range from itching, hives, or angioedema to severe anaphylaxis.
• A significant number reported solely gastrointestinal symptoms.
• Reactions typically start 3-8 hours after consuming mammalian meat or products derived from mammals.
• A common feature is the positive testing for alpha-gal IgE,
• Significant improvement is noticed when patients stick to an avoidance diet.
• There’s often a history of large local reactions to tick or other arthropod bites. 2
• Common symptoms include tingling sensation near the mouth, swelling, abdominal pain, heartburn, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, itching, hives, breathing difficulty, dizziness, and fainting.

Case Study: A Deep Dive

Consider a 43-year-old male who presented with recurring hives approximately every 21-28 days. He experienced severe hives after consuming alcohol or swimming in cold water. The various symptoms he showcased are not untypical for AGS patients. Over time, after undergoing several types of support and returning with aggravated symptoms after certain food consumption, it was decided to test for more determinants. The results came back positive for several infections, including Ehrlichia.

Following the detection, a comprehensive type of support was initiated using DesBio products:

We began with the OmniCleanse Detoxification program, and drainage for his lymphatic and immune function. The initial goal was to reduce allergic reactions, GI complaints, and fatigue symptoms. Once he was tolerating the allergy protocols, he began on SSRK’s to temporarily relieve the symptoms of the allergic triggers.

ANAP: SSR-60 days
ROCK: SSR-60 days
LYM: Combination- 60 days
1M’s and 10M’s 10 weeks each for ANAP:SSR 1M  | ANAP:SSR 10M  and ROCK:SSR 1M |  ROCK:SSR 10M

After 32 weeks, there was significant improvement in his condition. With the help symptom support strategies, a clean diet, and a cautious approach to food and beverages (especially eliminating alcohol), the patient was able to reduce his reactivity.

Product Recommendations

For those suspecting AGS, several DesBio products and protocols can be instrumental:

• Liposomal Resveratrol/Curcumin & Liposomal Quercetin: Include Phenolics that aid in temporarily relieving inflammation.

• Allergy Rescue: A remedy for the temporary relief of symptoms like hives, itching, and skin irritation.

• Digestaze, Intestinal Restore, GI Distress: Includes ingredients that supports the body with bloating, food sensitivity reactions, and general digestive discomfort.

• DesBio’s SSR protocols and supportive remedies come highly recommended by our practitioners for comprehensive support and relief.

Conclusion

Alpha-Gal Syndrome can be daunting due to its delayed onset and myriad of symptoms. Awareness, early detection, and a structured type of support can go a long way in ensuring a good quality of life for those affected.
