One of the most controversial topics in homeopathy is the practice of complex vs. classical homeopathic modalities. The homeopathic community has long been divided around this issue. Most practitioners who use homeopathy tend to use one and denigrate the other. These groups often don’t talk to each other.

Yet, I have met many classical homeopathic prescribers who are closet complex prescribers – some only use complex formulations in acute situations. I have also met many complex homeopathic prescribers who are closet classical homeopathic prescribers.

For practitioners, developing a basic understanding of the principles and practice of both modalities can help you understand your patients better, even if you don’t use both modalities. For consumers, developing this understanding can help with making informed choices about products, both in the store and online.

Foundation

Freedom from Prejudice

“Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, talked about freedom from prejudice as being of primary importance in a homeopathic practitioner. Prejudice is often the enemy of the capacity to listen from the heart.”

Here are the common criticisms that practitioners in each camp level at the other – and why understanding both sides matters.

From the Author

My Own Journey

My initial training in homeopathic medicine was as a classical homeopathic practitioner. I was taught that classical homeopathy was the only valid method of practice. Over the years, I came in frequent contact with complex homeopathy and complex homeopathic practitioners, but chose to stay focused on classical homeopathy.

Over the last 15 years of practice, I noticed that sometimes I had cases that did not respond to classical homeopathy, but did eventually respond to complex homeopathy treated by other practitioners. Complex homeopathic practitioners in turn began to send their failed cases to me, and many of these responded well to classical homeopathy.

Gradually I began to learn to respect complex homeopathy more and more and began to explore this rich and exciting modality. Observing thousands of cured cases using complex formulations helped me to perceive the efficacy and safety of this practice.

“I ultimately found a place in my heart for both classical and complex homeopathy. I experience them as different facets of the wonderful diamond that is homeopathy.”

Important Questions and Myths

What is a Complex Remedy or Combination Remedy?

Complex Remedy, Complex Formulation or Combination Remedy can be used interchangeably. Generally a complex homeopathic remedy contains multiple homeopathic ingredients or a single homeopathic ingredient at multiple potencies (homochord).

How prevalent is complex homeopathy?

Homeopathy is enjoying growing popularity worldwide. Here in the United States, approximately 4% of the US population uses homeopathy.

75%

Many complex homeopathic practitioners also identify themselves as functional medicine or integrative practitioners.

How well do complex homeopathic formulations work?

A majority of homeopathic clinical trials are conducted using complex formulations, as they are easier to research. Success rates in clinical trials are comparable between complex formulations and single remedies.

Research Finding

A systematic review in the European Journal of Integrative Medicine (2020) found that combination homeopathy showed promising results improving symptoms and quality of life in patients with allergies, respiratory infections, and musculoskeletal disorders.

Community Research

Community research studies conducted in North America in 2007 (1,200 patients) and 2014 (1,100 patients) showed that success rates for complex homeopathy and classical homeopathy were similar (Rowe et. al).

How do complex remedies work? Are they merely the sum of their ingredients?

Complex homeopathic formulations may be more than the sum of their ingredients. We know that in classical homeopathy, formation of salt remedies are more than the sum of their constituents (eg. Sodium, Chlorine and Natrum muriaticum). Recent research may indicate a synergistic and harmonic effect between ingredients that potentiate their effects.

Consider: Classical Homeopathy can be compared to the use of a single instrument, whereas complex formulations can be compared to the use of an orchestra. Both can provide beautiful music. The conductor of the orchestra (formulator) must ensure that the instruments work together in harmony and are well balanced.

Do complex formulations have more side effects than single remedies?

My experience in working with adverse events for companies that are both classically and complex oriented is that adverse event rates are comparable. Patient surveys in both 2007 (1,200 patients) and 2014 (1,100 patients) demonstrated no statistical difference between side effects in classical vs. complex homeopathy.

Side by Side

Comparing the Modalities

Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of both modalities can enrich the experience of both homeopathic practitioners and patients.

Classical homeopathic single remedy - high potency

Classical Homeopathy

Modality One

Classical Homeopathy

Strengths

+Long, rich history
+Majority of US homeopathic practitioners

+Gets to root cause (Etiology)
+Effective when Complex Homeopathy fails
+Produces deeper cures on all levels

Weaknesses

Harder for public to use and access
Takes a long time to learn
Longer case taking
Not clinically focused
Harder to use as an adjunct in practice

Modality Two

Complex Homeopathy

Strengths

+Simplicity, convenience and speed
+Easier to learn and prescribe – including by the public
+Shorter case taking / broader symptom coverage
+Condition and disease focused / good for severe diseases
+Effective when Classical Homeopathy fails
+Easier to use as an adjunct in practice
+Supports cells, tissues and organs
+Ideal for cases without individualizing symptoms

Weaknesses

Lack of individualization / limited customization
Case management options more limited (changing dosing rather than potency)
Complexity of evaluation (determining what worked)
More expensive treatment and medications
More frequent dosing / lower potencies

The Bottom Line

I believe that there is room for both classical and complex homeopathy within the homeopathic community. Both modalities have been shown to be effective and safe. The homeopathic community becomes stronger if we find ways to work together.
